Welcome to Ms. Haynes' Building Connections Classroom! This academic year we will continue working on our reading fluency, developing meaningful stories, establishing our math skills, exploring the world around us, being scientists, and socializing with our peers. The children are forming friendships, laughing, learning, and creating lasting memories.
Reading
First Grade
In reading this month, the students will be focusing on readers building good habits. Reading routines will be established in the classroom. Students will learn how to handle books and select "just right books" to read during DEAR. Students will learn about the relationship between pictures and words in a text. Students will sustain reading increasingly complex texts through a variety of genres with comprehension and fluency. The class will have classroom discussions to make predictions, use picture clues to decode words, and build reading stamina. Students will begin to track print, identify the front cover, back cover, title, author, illustrator.
Second Grade
In reading this month, the students will be focusing on readers selecting "just right books." Reading routines will be established in the classroom. Students will sustain reading increasingly complex texts through a variety of genres with comprehension and fluency. The class will sustain uninterrupted reading for 20 minutes. The students will participate in collaborative discussions, take picture walks, read with fluency, pay attention to punctuation to enhance comprehension and read stories about characters from different cultures.
Third Grade
In reading this month, the students will be various texts. The reading routines and expectations of reading workshop will be established in the classroom. Students will use prior knowledge and information from the text to make predictions and inferences. Students will decode words and comprehend the texts presented. Students will work in centers to reflect the material presented in daily lessons. The students will begin a group book Stone Fox.
Math
First Grade
The students are beginning Unit 1 of Everyday Math focusing on establishing math routines. The students will work on counting strategies, comparing numbers, organizing data in a tally chart, and adding and subtracting in number stories.
Second Grade
The students are beginning Unit 1 of Everyday Math focusing on establishing math routines. Students will learn about their math tools in the classroom and their reference books. Math concepts will be reviewed that include equivalent names for numbers, even and odd patterns, skip counting, comparing numbers and number families.
Third Grade
The students are beginning Unit 1 of Everyday Math focusing on establishing math routines. Students will learn about their math tools in the classroom and their reference books. Math concepts will be reviewed that include telling time, measuring objects to the nearest inch, answering questions about graphs and number stories.
Writing
First Grade
The students are working on launching writer's workshop. The students are creating maps of their hearts, which include special people, places, hobbies and pets. The students will work on creating a personal narrative, informational text, opinion piece, and an "All About" book. The students will focus on the writing process that includes editing and revision. All students will have an opportunity to publish his/her work using technology.
Second Grade
The students are working on launching writer's workshop. The students are creating maps of their hearts, which include special people, places, hobbies and pets. The students will work on creating personal narratives, realistic fiction, informational writing, nonfiction in a content area, opinion writing. The students will also focus on the writing process that includes editing and revision. All students will have an opportunity to publish his/her work using technology.
Third Grade

The students will work on creating personal narrative, literary essays, persuasive letter, realistic fiction, nonfiction. The students will also focus on the writing process that includes editing and revision. All students will have an opportunity to publish his/her work using technology.
